Kids Beds Bunk
Bunk beds add drama to kids' rooms and also give them the feeling of adventure. To make bunks more appealing to children Ms. Keenan often includes a shelf to store books or a reading lamp in every sleeping nook.
Many of our kids beds bunks can be converted to two complete twin beds ideal if you are planning to move your children to their own bedrooms at some point. Choose from finishes like the brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.
Stairs or Ladders
You can pick between stairs or ladders when you are choosing bunk beds for children. Ladders are cheaper and simple to put in, and they provide an easy way to climb into the top bed. They are also considered to be safer than staircases, as they have a wider area for children to step on and a handrail built-in. Ladders also usually have grooves on the steps, which help prevent slippage when climbing up or down the bed.
If you prefer the style and look of stairs, then they can make an elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases are also great for rooms that are small on space since they don't obstruct the room as ladders do. They are usually made of wood or metal and can complement a variety of bedroom styles. Some staircases have integrated storage drawers. They are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed .
When choosing between a ladder or stairs take into account the age of your child. While it is recommended no one sleep on the top bunk below the age of 6, children who are comfortable climbing vertically might be better off using stairs than a ladder. If you are planning to use your bunk bed to accommodate guests, such as young children or adults with limited mobility, it is recommended to use stairs.
A straight staircase on the side of the bunk requires at least 95" of space on each side. If you do not have the space, you could opt for a u shaped staircase which does not require as much space, but allows you to get access to the top bunk in a safe and safely. Certain beds let you disconnect the stairs when they're not being used. This reduces the footprint of the bed and makes it more versatile for multipurpose spaces. You can also find stairs that connect to the end the bed. This eliminates the need for separate handrails, and makes it easier to climb to the bottom for children.
Guard Rails
Guard rails allow kids to climb into and out of their beds on their own and give them the feeling of independence and confidence. But they must be positioned properly, ensuring that there aren't any gaps or loosening occurs between the rails of the guard and bed frame. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer when installing guard rails, and ensure that you examine them regularly to ensure that they're not loose or have holes that could result in trapping.
One of the most important safety concerns for bunk beds is to ensure they are kept away from electrical devices and other objects that could be projectiles if your children play or sleep. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, as they could cause a risk of falling in the event that children climb on the top of the bed.
A safety feature you may be considering is a night lighting for the ladder; it will help illuminate the path up and down in the event that kids awake at night and need to go to the bathroom, or wake up by a storm and have to make their way out of their room safely.
Another excellent safety feature for bunks is a safety net, which can be placed on the top of the bunk to prevent children from falling down while asleep or playing. This is a great idea especially for older children who tend to sleep on the top bunk.

Guardrails must be firmly attached to the bunk bed structure and are not removable without the use of tools. The guardrail openings above the mattress base should not be more than 3.5 inches wide to prevent entrapment or strangulation. To test this, place the wedge block shown in Figure 1 into each of the openings on the lower edge of the topmost guardrail member and above the underside of the mattress foundation. Then apply a 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the largest end of the block and keep it there for 1 minute.
It's a good idea inform your children to not hang anything on the ladder or guardrail like clothing, belts, and sports equipment. Instead you should make use of an organized rack to keep these objects from becoming a strangulation risk for your child. Be sure that not more than one child can sleep on the top bunk. This could lead to an unsafe imbalance and fall.
Mattresses
Consider your child's age and size when selecting a mattress for a bunk bed. A bunk mattress should last at least eight years or until the children are no longer sharing bedrooms. You'll want to choose one that will grow with your child and still provide enough comfort as they grow older.
Bunk mattress sizes are usually full-size or twin, and there are a variety of alternatives that will fit either. If your child has asthma or allergies, choose a hypoallergenic bed with a dust-mite barrier and moisture-wicking cover. Mattresses that have an antimicrobial coating will protect the foam from harmful bacteria and germs.
Another factor to consider is the feeling of your mattress. Children are generally heavier than adults and require a mattress which is firm but also comfortable. Many hybrid and latex mattress have a firm and a soft side to meet the needs of both children.
Memory foam mattresses can be great for children however they're not our first choice since they can trap heat and may be too difficult on spines of young children. Think about a hybrid or latex mattress, which offers strong support and cooling infusions for your child or guests to rest comfortably.
Low-profile mattresses are often the best option for bunk beds for children. They are designed to be less bulky than standard mattresses, and to maximize the safety rail's height on the top bunk. They also minimize "filler" materials to provide the highest quality in a slim design.
Consider an innerspring model or a hybrid with upper comfort layers which can be removed and replaced as your child develops. These models will give you an idea of how the mattress will stand up as your child grows and you can always put in a mattress pad or bed skirt to prevent it from slipping off the frame. Some beds have side rails or lip built in to prevent this.
Storage
Bunk beds can be an excellent way to save space in shared kid rooms. Bunk beds can also be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing two large single beds. Some bunks offer the option of adding an trundle bed that can be hidden beneath the bunk that is not being used.
Consider installing a kids bedroom furniture combination set that includes bookcases, desks, and/or dressers to maximize storage space in a bedroom with a bunk bed. This will allow you keep all your child's clothing, toys and personal items in one spot instead of stuffing everything into overstuffed closets or chests. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a range of retailers and typically comply with all safety standards of the federal government.
Stacked bunks are an ideal playground for the imagination as children can transform the space beneath into cozy places to hide and play. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked six bunks to create the ultimate children' space. It can be used as a place for playing, sleeping or even for twirling superhero capes. The room is decorated with a bubble wallcovering from Chasing Paper, and the ceiling is painted Benjamin Moore Blue Jean.
If you're unable to construct an entryway to your bunk beds, a ladder is a good alternative. The ladders are constructed using a single socket Flange, Single Socket, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between ladder rungs. The rungs of the ladder are also positioned so that they are flush with the ground instead of being above it to make climbing less intimidating.
Another way to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is to install loft beds for kids that can be moved down to just above the floor. This lets you slide desks, dressers and toy chests under the elevated beds. This is an effective way to maximize space and can be a great solution for smaller bedrooms or in a big family home where the beds need to be able to accommodate many people sleeping.
